Effect of interventions for obesity of children and adolescents in Korea: Evidence from existing meta-analys

Abstract
Purpose: We aim to evaluate the effect of interventions for pediatric obesity in an evidence-based manner by reviewing existing meta-analyses in Korea.

Methods: Korean electronic databases were searched for articles published until April 2019. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) systematic reviews or meta-analyses concerning the intervention of obesity; (2) children or adolescents (between 2 and 18 years of age) as subjects; (3) articles published in Korean. Each study was evaluated via the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews for quality assessment. We conducted a qualitative analysis to evaluate the strengths, limitations, implications of each study.

Results: Our final analysis included 8 meta-analyses. Main intervention was exercise primarily in the school environment and resulted in moderate improvement of body mass index of subjects in 6 studies (75%). Multidimensional approach of exercise and diet, behavior, parental involvement seemed to be effective, but the results were inconsistent. Physical activity interventions with medium to high intensity, lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour, 3-4 times per week were effective. However, evidence from the current study was insufficient due to the low quality of included studies; most of them were conducted with small numbers of participants less than 30 people during a short period of less than 6 months with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design.

Conclusion: Insufficient evidence from existing meta-analyses of intervention studies has made it difficult to characterize effective interventional programs for the management of childhood obesity. Large, well-designed intervention studies are needed to provide an evidence-based intervention for pediatric obesity before future meta-analysis.
